AMEN
For more than a quarter of a century, Nórín Ní Riain has made an important contribution to modern performance of Irish traditional music. A native of Limerick, she has made three recordings with the Monks of Glenstal Abbey in which she accompanied the Gregorian Chant with a traditional instrument as well as singing herself.
Nóirín Ní Riain has a distinctive high voice, and she specialises in decorating the vocal line with intricate grace notes. Along with her two sons, Mícheál and Eoin, Nóirín has produced a new album of sacred songs, AMEN. Recorded in the generous acoustic of the monastic chapel of Glencairn Abbey, the 17 songs are mostly from the Christian tradition. In addition to a number of pieces of Gregorian Chant, there are fresh arrangement of hymns such as Jesus My All to Heaven Has Gone, God that Madest Earth and Heaven and Lead Kindly Light. There is a haunting setting of The Beatitudes and an evocative Caoineadh na dTrí Mhuire - the Lament of the Three Marys.
