The amazing tradition of traditional Christmas Carols from Co. Wexford is Ireland’s best kept secret! In the parish of Kilmore Quay, South East Wexford, every Christmas in an almost 300 year unbroken tradition, these ecstatic carols are sung by a family- related schola of six men.
I heard the incredulous sound of these carols them in 1969 and have been captivated by the spell ever since. All the melodies here date at least to the 17th century; the words are Bishop Luke Waddinge’s; christmas poems to ‘retrieve’ these wonderful tunes all around him! We sing them our own way, but in reverence, admiration and respect for the original Wexford carol singing tradition.
